Friends With Benefits: Have Better Sex with Oshihana

It’s no secret that at Momotaro, we love a good collaboration. It takes a lot of products, people, doctors, and teachers to navigate the unchartered territory of vaginal (and sexual) wellness. While we like to consider ourselves experts in vulvovaginal health and helping people find their own ways to feel better, there’s always room for more questions, discussions, and learning.

When it comes to intimacy, we’re bombarded with unrealistic standards, false advertisements that say sex is simple, that it
comes easy. We’re told that sex looks, feels, sounds, and even smells a certain way. (Quick reminder that your vagina should NOT smell like roses and orgasms aren’t the ultimate goal during sex.)

Penises don’t always get hard; vaginas aren’t always wet. Sometimes the strap-on comes loose, or the vibrator isn’t charged. Whatever the “issue” may be, we often fumble around the conversations and don’t even know where to begin to look for tools that can help us have better sex.

Meet OSHIHANA—our sister company, BFF, love of our polyamorous life and sometimes coconspirator. Oshihana is a premium skin care line devoted entirely to sexual wellness and recovery to help you have better sex with functional botanicals. Using only certified organic ingredients, Oshihana makes effective, soothing topicals that help enhance your physical and emotional intimacy with a partner or yourself with the power of hemp.

Why Is My Vagina Dry?

Vaginal dryness is normal, but that doesn’t make it any more comfortable! With the change in temperature and an apocalyptic year, our bodies have been put through a lot of stress—and our vaginas are feeling a little dryer than usual.

There’s no shame in regularly using your tried and true bedside companions to keep your vagina healthier, happier, and W-A-P-ier. Hello—that's why we exist! But we have to be careful what we put where. A lot of vaginal and sexual wellness products in the drugstore are full of harsh chemicals that do more harm than healing or only offer temporary solutions to a larger issue.

If you’re feeling thirstier than usual, read on to get a better understanding why you might be experiencing vaginal dryness and our suggested solutions that will help alleviate discomfort while keeping the chemical creeps away.

Cause 1 Cold Weather

A combination of chilly weather and less Vitamin D means our bodies are working harder than ever to keep us warm, which can cause general fatigue. It also means that pumping blood to your vagina isn’t a top priority and our skin might feel dry all over.

Suggested Solution You’ll feel like you’re taking a bath in literal sunshine when you add a scoop of Oshihana's Golden Glitter Bath Soak to your tub. The hemp and terpene infused salt bath serves a dose of warmth and comfort to help relax your entire body and mind.

Cause 2 Stress

Suggested Solution We might think to have a glass of wine to unwind at the end of the day, but too much alcohol leads to dehydration and the dreaded hangxiety. Replace your shot of whiskey with a drop or two of Tincture in your Hot Toddy to get in the holiday spirit without spirits—or a hangover.

Rest your legs against the wall as you lie on your back. This simple inversion pose, called Viparita Karani, helps improves circulation. It also naturally relaxes your pelvic floor muscles, so it’s a great position if you deal with chronic pelvic pain.

Cause 3 Your Period Products

Suggested Solutions  The “femcare” aisle is a landmine of chemical-laden products that are not only harsh, but can be physically abrasive on the delicate skin on our vulvas.  Find a natural replacement with organic cotton tampons or reusable pads. A flexible period cup can also help reduce irritation if you’re looking for an even more eco-friendly solution.

For immediate relief, slather on the Salve as needed. It’s Coconut and Jojoba Oil base helps protect your skin’s natural moisture barrier to protect you from everyday stressors and general irritation from sex, clothing, or exercise. When used regularly, Salve works with your body to help balance pH and naturally supports your body’s natural ability to heal itself without disrupting hormones, pheromones, or medication.

Cause 4 Low Estrogen

Everyone’s hormones fluctuate, but taking antibiotics or hormonal birth control can lower your estrogen levels further. As the primary sex hormone for people with vaginas, low estrogen means a dry(er) vagina and perhaps less of a sex drive—both of which are common symptoms of peri/menopause.

Suggested Solutions Your first line of defense is a healthy, hydrated body and brain. Cover the basics by drinking enough water, eating a balanced diet, and incorporating small rituals that won’t interfere with your hormones. Take a daily probiotic to maintain a healthy gut, which influences all of the other systems in your body, including hormones, stress levels, and even your immunity!

Other causes for a dry vagina include

  • breastfeeding
  • cancer treatment such as chemotherapy
  • immune system disorders
  • depression
  • childbirth
  • surgical removal of the ovaries
  • smoking cigarettes

Obviously, there are countless factors that can contribute to vaginal dryness and it can be quite uncomfortable and even painful. If you’ve been dealing with a chronically dry vagina or painful intercourse, schedule an appointment with a trusted medical professional to discuss your options.
